Using a Canon MP780 multifunction printer that works with the
gutenprint drivers-- this one and the MP760 both work with driver BJC or MP 7000-- don't use the suggested bj 600 or 6xx--or it prints on 1/4 page.
(works better than the commercial driver turbo)
Also--I am getting twice the download speed on this machine than I did when I had Windoze installed--cable modem/Comcast
ethernet and using a 1999 or 2000 3com nic-- downloads from ftp(non-passive) even thru the old wired discontinued router from Linksys_networkeverywhere average from 600kbs to over 1500kbs-- using Microsnot I never got more than 200kbs or so.And Gnu/Linux had no problem recognizing that I was using a router whereas with Win2k and WinXP, I had to install the drivers that came with the router and register a mac address thru the site to get it to work.
As much as I like Firefox and use it a lot, I have to admit that Epiphany is a lot faster even tho' it's built on the same frame I think.
The 2.6.+ kernel is real good on this old Dell.It's also good on my mom's Gateway (1999 version).
On an older nVidia agp card like mine--TNT/TNT2 Riva,it's better not to use the newer nvidia drivers--the nv drivers standard in Debian and it's descendents work better.
Dell loves Debian distros, it does not like Gentoo,Fedora,Suse or FreeBSD however-- I had Etch on this and crashed it (my fault) but I'm going back to Etch (or maybe even Sarge)--experimenting with Gentoo and it will not install right--even with the same basic kernel--it's the other stuff that screws it up-- portage and emerge hate it.
Fedora is slow, Suse doesn't work right.
Sorry about so many comments but things like the fact that
my graphics with Gnu/Deb are fantastically clear and not "pixelized" like with WinXP is amazing. Viewing old family photos in Gimp or even the image viewer is unbelievable--not
to mention the quality of the digital photos.
And wow!--so what if I crash it--I back up stuff to cds or an extra drive that I want and HEY--I can just reinstall it and not worry about having to have a browser full of Gates
crap that assures me of getting an update.
You can't exactly listen to Stallman talk or read his stuff without having the urge to throw Bill's stuff out the door.
